RINI SEAL is the label of Rini Seal, a designer and artist working from Ballygunge, Kolkata. The work sits where she lives: between the hand — kantha stitch, ikkat, batik, handloom cotton and silk — and the way an urban woman actually dresses.

Much of the collection begins as a saree that already had a life. A Lurex handwoven saree becomes a draped dress; a kantha throw becomes a jacket you can wear from either side; a printed silk becomes a kimono-sleeved convertible. The cut changes, the cloth keeps its story — and everything gets pockets, because we wear our clothes in the real world.

Rini also works as a wardrobe stylist for women and men — a session with her is less about buying new things than about seeing what your wardrobe already holds. Write to us if you’d like one.
